  1. pete Says:

    okay this may sound strange:

what you guys call “urban music” is in germany actually called “black music”

    this is a common term!

  2. E Says:

LOL black people in America would probably have a temper tantrum if they saw that!

  3. John Says:

What you guys call “urban” or “black” music, we in the US call it “total shit”!

  4. Anonymous Says:

How is it inappropriate to refer to music that black people listen to as “black music”?

  5. Annon Says:

because not only black people listen to it?
because not all black people listen to it?
because its a form of segregation?
    Shall I continue?

  6. zeroes Says:

I agree, if it were wrong then it will be taken down. Being correct can’t hurt.

  7. Richard Nixon Says:

So do we call country music “red neck” music now?

Or german music “Nazi ” Music? come on

Germany . . . will you ever change?

  8. Happy J Says:

Because black people listen to more than whatever falls in your “black music” category. Its a fact that Rap music is so successful and mainstream because of…wait for it… white youth.

  9. dave Says:

well anyone can listen to or make rap or urban music, but i dunno just seems a bit silly, I mean where is the jazz section or the blues section two other music genres that are heavily influenced by black people.

  10. i'mblackbitch Says:

believe it or not 90% Of rap music, so called black music bought in america is bought by the american white youth….black people don’t bother buying most of the garbage out there…

  11. Adam Says:

It’d be nice to know where that picture was taken.

  12. asshat Says:

So what about Eminem then? Does that go into “Black Music”. How about the mostly black Dave Matthews Band? That’s some of the whitest shit I’ve ever heard.

  13. CiteIt! Says:

It’d like to see someone cite a credible source about the amount of white people who purchase or contribute to rap music before talking about it.

    That’d be nice.

  14. The Gog Says:

It has nothing to do with who listens to it. It has to do with the music’s roots. Modern Hip-hop really has its roots in all the genres developed by blacks. That is, to name a few: ragtime, jazz, r&b, doo-wop, etc. These are all very much “black music”

also, “red-neck” and and nazi have intentionally negative connotations. “black” is not bad word.

  15. Lavarock Says:

Oh, hi, the people wailing at this are the only racists. That sign isn’t for rap or jazz or something. It’s for a kind of urban techno. It’s called Black Music. No race in there at all.

  16. Dwayne Says:

i say that it is black music cause its mainly performed by black people, and rap/hip hop sucks donkey nuts

  17. lulz Says:

Hey, it’s better then, ‘The musical stylings of SAVAGE NEGRO BEASTS’.

  18. Villain Says:

If “urban” means “black”, then only black people live in cities? Technically, heavy metal and punk rock are “urban” since the bands who play it usually come from cities. Also, they are most commonly white guys. It’s not “rural” music, since that would have to be country, which blacks have been known to perform on occasion. Anyway, why can’t we see the “White Music” section? Such a label would be every bit as racist as “Black Music”. Of course, racism towards whites is oddly acceptable in our society, much like sexism towards males. Hypocrisy stinks.

  19. Chuck Says:

HA, hate to sound racist, but 90% of rap music is bought by white people because black people can’t afford it or would rather buy drugs, and the ones who can afford it have better taste. Almost every time I drive next to a black person they’re listening to rap, R&B, or hip hop, so obviously you can’t just base who listens to music off of that statistic.

  20. Das ist gut ! Says:

    Shut up you fucking niggers.

  21. hesitant optimism Says:

This may be naive but maybe they don’t mean black as in the people, but black as in dark, ill-intentioned or mysterious. Black magic isn’t racist, black ninjas, black hat… jussayin…

  22. Chris Says:

“Black Music” is indeed a common term in Germany (I’m German). It is not meant to be racist. We don’t know the term “Urban Music”.

“Black Music” is kind of a superset of R&B, Hip Hop and Rap. And I think the term is also used in other European countries. The “black” in “Black Music” is generally NOT associated with skin color.

  23. dan Says:

Uh Gog, Rocks roots can be traced back to blues and jazz, yet I don’t that it’s considered “black” music, otherwise that would leave very little music open to non black.
And if it’s such an appropriate term, why is there no “white music” section?

  24. shannon Says:

if you really believed that, Gog, then why don’t you go up to a black person and let them know how you feel? Be sure to say, “hey, I love this black music! Thanks, blackie!”

  25. i'mwhitebi(a)tch Says:

“because its a form of segregation?”

No it isn’t. It’s furthering stereotypes, sure. It’s ignorance to the complexities of other cultures, yes. But segregation it isn’t. Feel free to look up segregation in a dictionary if you feel I’m wrong about this.

  26. Wilso Says:

“Because black people listen to more than whatever falls in your “black music” category. Its a fact that Rap music is so successful and mainstream because of…wait for it… white youth.”

White youth… trying to be black.

  27. Tim Says:

Quick note to all those taking offense: Calling someone or something “Black” is not, as one poster put it, a form of segregation. I’m from South Florida; we have no racial lines there. If you call one of my black friends “black”, it’s not as if every person in the room’s head turns. To take offense to the term “black” is to give power to those who use it as a degrading term. EMBRACE THE INNER (OUTER) BLACK!
Btw, I’m white and would take no offense to someone calling me “white”. Though that seems obvious, it’s important to note.

  28. WTF? Says:

So ‘black’ is as offensive as ‘red neck’ or ‘nazi’? Last I heard there was a backlash happening against ‘African-American’ back to ‘black’.

And you know what? Not everyone from the country makes/listens to country music! Not everyone from Germany makes/listens to German music! But those are the places the music originated, so the names stuck.

Typical ludicrous, hyper-pc American drama queen BS. You all (black, white, hispanic, asian, and any other arbitrary subgroup you’ve decided to classify yourselves into) need to get over yourselves. Chill out, brush the sand out of your vaginas, and pay some attention to things that actually matter rather than getting your panties in a bunch every time someone refers to an ethnic group.

  29. mustangpattie Says:

Too funny! I have always called Motown, black music…LOL. As for white kids and rap, that can’t be true as gangstas are trying to recruit gang members and are being very successful.

  30. Not Offended.... Says:

this entire chain of comments is unnecessary…the pic is funny (a little); but the whole playing the race card, and calling people “niggers,” and “superset”s of music is unwarranted and pointless…nothing said or done here will cause anyone else to lose sleep or cause an uprising or worse: a CULTURAL REVOLUTION…

hmmm, come to think of it, hasn’t it been awhile since the American Revolution??

  31. Runamok Says:

WAIT. B4 people get all out of wack, what style of music do Germans refer to as “black music?” Is “black music some kind of European urban-techno, or is it American hip-hop? Does anyone even know for sure?

This sign advert could be complete ignorance, but it could also be a case of poor word choice. Perhaps, it’s acceptable in Europe, and it’s only America’s race-centric culture that misconstrues it.

Either way, I’m ashamed at some of these replies above. They reveal just how ignorant and bass-ackwards some people still are. Even though, I’m not naive enough to claim there aren’t some small truths in our stereotypes. But some people are two stupid to grasp anything beyond simple “black and white” ideas.

  32. CRT Says:

Yeah tell me about Black Metal then

  33. Bailey Says:

“because not only black people listen to it?”

We’re speaking of the majority of listeners, as well as the majority of performers, who happen to be black.

“because not all black people listen to it?”

    Again, the majority.

“because its a form of segregation?”

And who should be offended by this? The music? Black people hardly have a reason to feel offended, unless of course there’s that one black country singer who’s just trying to get his voice heard.

    “Shall I continue?”

Not unless you can think of some legitimate reasons for any sort of racial diatribe. Those above are pitiful examples.

  34. Off topic. Says:

I have definatly been to the store in that pic… it’s in a mall in berlin.

  35. Fleming Says:

    Racism and segregation?

Please, for your own good, cease using the internet immediately. You’re mental acumen is hardly as remarkable as your mother has informed you.

If you continue you’re only going to embarrass yourself and your family by flaunting your ignorance in front of your betters. (i.e.: Anyone with even a trace amount of cognitive ability.)

  36. Anonymous Says:

The people who are offended by this are those who encourage rascism to continue.

  37. salstress Says:

don’t forget, poop is black (when you eat oreos)

  38. Chris Simon Says:

I don’t see anything wrong with this. I see the sign, I know immediately what kind of music it is…Garbage I don’t wanna listen to.

  39. Shawn Dowler Says:

Here are the black Music charts for Germany.

    http://www.kissfm.de/cgi-bin/WebObjects/KissFM.woa/1/cms/1055518/Deutsche-Black-Charts.html?wosid=NU2sDcqseq3JCZbqzDb4yg

  40. Common Sense Says:

    “Annon Says:
    July 16th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

because not only black people listen to it?
because not all black people listen to it?
because its a form of segregation?
    Shall I continue?”

A form of segregation? NO SHIT, MORON: It’s called “organization”. Record stores, video stores, clothing stores… all of them “segregate” their products. I suppose you have an issue with “menswear”?

    Pompous dipshit.

  41. schmeh Says:

    AHAHAHA

  42. 'cron Says:

Fortunately Fleming, no one is listening to you.

The sign itself is harmless, but you can’t fail to appreciate the ironic instance in which ‘black music’ is a perfectly acceptable label, yet if there were a ‘white music’ sign then there would inevitably be a problem. So who’s being racist? The people complaining at the sign or the people who agree with the sign?

  43. Tanto Says:

Seriously? Stop complaining. It is funny. And it is primarily “black” music. How many black rock/pop/metal bands do you know? The fact is that the majority of rap and hip-hop groups are black. Get over it and stop thinking that every single thing is racist. Everyone knows that black people like kfc, watermelon, sprite and rap. It is just common knowledge. Don’t get upset by stereotypes if you just keep perpetuating them.
    hugz

  44. plato Says:

racism is based on intent!! ignorance that you offended someone…is ignorance!!

  45. matt Says:

i have a book by Amiri Baraka called ‘Black Music’ so perhaps there is some legitimacy to the term. Kind of a big container though, distinguishing between jazz and blues (which Baraka wrote about) and hip hop, r n b may be a good idea. But i don’t see why this should be so scandalous.

  46. Gavin Says:

Even you call it Urban, dose that not also segregate people. As people in the country might like to listen to urban music!

  47. Nazi Says:

FOR FUCK SAKES you nazi mother fuckers
get over it, whatever ur the arion race good for you
    your still fucken non-linguistic pigs
    AUUCHH ZEIBENNNNN
na na sorry to all the normal german people, but theres a fuckload of hitler loving illuminazi mother fuckers out there.

  48. Jamal Says:

    You guys are all adorable!

  49. seo Says:

I don’t see anything wrong with this. I hear “black music” all the time here in UK. Like Latin music and other stiles.

  50. stfuyouwhiningignorantdicks Says:

    a: www.mobo.com
b: in Germany Black Music does not mean what most of you have automatically assumed it means. Damn crackers…

  51. Black Music Powah! Says:

Comment #14 by The Gog is right. Black Music isn’t a bad term to refer to music with roots from R&B, Blues, Soul, Jazz, etc. It is how it’s been referred to all the time.

Now saying that the term Black Music is racist and so on is just taking things too far…

  52. Mobwile Says:

In Australia they refer to rap or soul music as “Nigger beats”. Always have to give it to the Australians to find a way to be sickeningly racist.

  53. Larry Says:

Why not just call it “Rap” or “Hip-Hop” or whatever? I really don’t think the word “music” should be used to describe this.

  54. richard Says:

i think people should get over it , we will get rid of the signs for black music when you get rid of the mobo’s (music of black origin) oh but thats not racist is it…..wait

  55. uhhh Says:

    Fleming….

YOU’RE an idiot. Learn to spell those big words before you use them.

Obviously this is a cultural thing that nobody should be concerned about. I’m sure Al Sharpton will be there within the hour to talk about how racist GERMANY is.

  56. SlowIce Says:

I grew up in Germany, and i have never seen signs stating ‘Black Music’ in any store with reputation. They sell the music the same as over here as HIP-HOP, R&B, Jazz, Blues, Gospel, etc…
I do agree, that a lot of people do refer to it as ‘black music’, but it is not the official way.

  57. James Says:

Even BBC Radio 1 (UK) refers to urban music as “Black Music” now.. it is a universally accepted term.

  58. offended Says:

some people get offended very easily.
i wouldn’t have even thought about it being racist if you haven’t said so.
at last, hip hop, blues, jazz, r’n'b, rock’n'roll and so on were achievements of black people. it would be disgraceful if you wouldn’t acknowledge that.

  59. eebZookee Says:

For the people who think somehow this is offensive to Black people, please get a clue. What is offensive is calling music we originate and prefer to listen to as urban. All music mde in a city is by definition ‘urban’. Not all of it is Black music. I prefer the music to be actually called Black music if it is Black culture that inspires it.

You all made a big deal out of nothing here.

  60. eppo Says:

perhaps they mean the music is just really dark and moody & not racially slanted…

  61. Jorge Says:

Exactly. There’s Latin Music. And by the way I don’t like it even though I’m latin myself.

And no I’m not offended by it nor do I know anyone who is.

  62. Jimbob Says:

    That is hilarious!

  63. Rick Says:

They probably also put the Cracker Music next to the Cheesey Music. I mean, country next to pop.

  64. anon Says:

Is it ok for someone to call me a white person? Then why is is not ok for me to call you black? its the same damn thing! Its like if I started a white person only club at school, when all the other ethnic people have their own clubs, i would be the only racist one. It makes no sense.

  65. Brutha Man Says:

    Stop the PC bullshit, man!

  66. Nayr Says:

Does anyone feel offended by BET(Black Entertainment Television)? How is this any different?

  67. Jeff Says:

Just an example: I wouldn’t be offended if the had a section labeled “White Music” that contained a certain genre of music.

  68. rTboy Says:

    Latin America is a REGION,
    Black is a COLOR.
I’m WHITE, but that doesn’t mean I listen/create WHITE music.

i wish i was that ignorant of other cultures to think that this makes sense…

  69. Josh Says:

omg its only racist if you take it that way, i am white and listen to rap, personal opinion or taste does not matter, if i liked elvis i wouldnt care what you thought about it… grow up, as someone as stated the sign is not meant to be racist, its the minds of the readers warping it into something it isnt. its like saying french fries are incorrect, who cares its a potato…. who cares its a sign for music, im sure they dont mean NEGRO music, as you would find white and every other color of people in that section buying their fave tunes. and like someone said Latin styles… so is that racist too? get off this walkin on eggshell crap, its music, its art… wether you agree or not, this is about a sign not your personal taste of music, now go away Mozartz.

  70. Lauren Says:

A skin colour is not a music genre for me.

I also dread to think of the way ethnic minorities would act if all music was catagorised this way. As well as a “black music” section, there was a “white music” section. People would be so angry.

  71. Jcm Says:

I’ve actually seen a sign just like that in Genoa Italy and I took a picture as well. Either it’s the same sign or the same store. Might be a chain.

  72. Dick Says:

I agree with the “red neck” music comment…country sucks…

  73. ANONYMOUS Says:

I know gross generalizations are annoying to the people grossly generalized, but urban music doesn’t work either because there are lots of rural idiots listening to that dreck too. Maybe we could just call it “Bad ?Music?”

  74. anthion Says:

let’s change the word ‘black’ to ‘wonderful’. So ‘black music’ would be ‘wonderful music’ and ‘black hole’ would be ‘wonderful hole’ and ‘black history month’ would be ‘wonderful history month’. etc. life is good.

  75. 8Man Says:

Of course listening to ‘black’ music on my iBeatBlaxx makes it sound even better.

    See: http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=ibeatblaxx&meta=

  76. Hot Damn! Says:

This has stirred up quite a debate! I’m sure I’ll get burned for saying this, but when can we just reach the point that we can look back at these small racial nuances and laugh? I mean as much as I HATE Carlos Mencia (and believe me, I do), I have to say he has a valid point in saying that the only way to get through racism is to laugh it off. This picture was posted to be funny, whether it is supposed to refer to rap/hiphop/r&b or some kind of “dark” techno music. Racism doesn’t exist until you give it meaning, therefore this picture isn’t racist until you argue that it is. It can just be a funny unfortunate happening that the sign looks inappropriate and you can laugh at it, or you can make it inappropriate and fight over it. Is it really worth it?

  77. bytes4thought Says:

    still better than “nigga noise”

  78. Todd Says:

Black music is the best music of all times no doubt about it all the white folks bite on their style all the time. Everything that becomes popular has been started by the black race. Even your beloved backyard sleepin with your sister country music. If you understood that the world would be a very dull place without the inspiration the likes of James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, Maceo Parker, Coltrane, TMonk, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, Bootsy Collins, Stevie Wonder,Funkadelic, need I go on? You younger generation need to check yourself and I defy you to find anything that moves you quite like these artists that I mentioned above. One other thing I am a Corn Fed White Boy!!!!!

  79. Crayola Says:

Let us all throw a hissy fit over a music genre who’s title is obviously (to me) lost in translation. Now Reparations, Black history month, Minority Grants, Affirmative Action… “Those” are racist things not this silly little sign.

  80. dvn Says:

amid all the argument, a small factoid for your pleasure:

you’re all depressingly retarded for even entertaining the vaguest notion that this is somehow racist.

  81. jim Says:

its called black cause its evil

  82. M Says:

Does that mean it the jazz section?

  83. NYHick Says:

Why do people complain about innapropriate advertising? I mean for reals. Word to your HR department?

So at work when someone sends me LOL porn, I’m not supposed to forward it along? This stuff’s the best

    http://www.icanhassex.com

  84. STFU Says:

You are all retards. I saw this on digg, and it was just one of those funny “don’t see it every day” signs. Black folks need to get over the whole racist thing. It seems to me sometimes you all are just as racist as the rest of us, if you define racism as bigotry. Every time a racial event like this dumb-ass sign comes up, you have to put on your dumb victim hat and hide behind your people’s history like slavery happened in your lifetime. Like now white people have to kiss your ass for eternity and even that wont be enough. Just STFU. Im sick of it. I was never a plantation owner, and im pretty sure non of you “blacks” (don’t know if that offends you) have ever been oppressed more than maybe a punch in the nose for being a redundant fag. Seriously. If Canadian people smacked up some Pols tomorrow i damn sure guarantee that in 100 years people of Polish origin aren’t going to have a menstrual explosion every time a Canadian person uses the term “Polish Saucage” or some dumb random shit like that… Damn -peace

  85. Lari Says:

Different culture, different language, different connotations. That could only be considered racist in certain English speaking countries. Relaaax guys

  86. Yogi Says:

hey dudes…i’d like to know what you guys know about the wording of german music genres!
“black music” might not be the most fortune of wordings, but it is DEFINITELY not meant racist in germany!
you can’t assume that a german has the same “feeling” of the english language that you guys do. i thought as well that “black music” is an appropriate term (up until now)…and i’ve lived in a english speaking country (ireland) for two years!

  87. Spike Lee Says:

It’s funny how the issue of black and white relations is such a big deal in this country that it’s boiling over to a funny image site because of some dumb ass picture. It seems like for year the “Blacks” and the PC white set, were the only ones bitching and moaning about whitey being racist, and keeping the Black man down. I think now, we’re at a tipping point where theres some white people who have chosen not to follow the polically correct mindset of believing that all whites are evil; and that it’s just getting annoying to hear all the pissing and moaning from the black community; especially when so many of them are perpetuating their own demise. Black people…stop your bitching and move on; and PC white people, stop trying to act like you’re so righteous, and that you’re going to save the world by demonizing your own race. Stop trying to find fault in everything, because you are just looking for trouble….50 years ago, there was alot more to find, now, not so much.
